Short Story ISU; Lather and Nothing Else
Lather and Nothing Else. The title says it all. This short story is about an average barber overcoming his biggest obstacle in life. He is forced to hide his true identity of being a rebel; the victims of the brutal killings in the town, and pursue his job as a professional barber. As this cunning plan slowly falls into place, the captain of the murders comes into the barber shop for a simple shave. As this was a huge opportunity for the barber to slit his throat and save the remaining rebels, he resisted the urge and did what was asked for, a shave. The theme in this story reflects and summarizes the reasons to why the barber had not killed the man who was destroying innocent people. " our roles determine our actions", and in this case, he was a barber, not a murderer. This blog will explain three different media sources that relate to the this theme.
""Unfaithful"- Rihanna
Story of my life
Searching for the right
But it keeps avoiding
me
Sorrow in my soul
Cause it seems that wrong
Really loves
my company
He's more than a man
And this is
more than love
The reason that the sky is blue
The clouds are rolling in
Because I'm gone again
And to him
I just can't be true
And I know that he knows I'm unfaithful
And it kills
him inside
To know that I am happy with some
other guy
I can see him dying
I don't wanna do this
anymore
I don't wanna be the reason why
Everytime I walk out
the door
I see him die a little more inside
I don't wanna hurt him anymore
I don't wanna
take away his life
I don't wanna be...
A murderer
In this song "unfaithful" and the
short story "lather that's all", both Rihanna and the barber go through similar stages of confusion, and the idea of murdering. An example of these similarities with these lyrics and the short story "lather and Nothing Else" is that both Rihanna - in this case- and the barber, go through the same kind of pressure of "murdering". Rihanna can't take that she's watching this guy "suffer" and wants to put him out of his misery. In lather and nothing else, the barber doesn't want the other rebels to suffer so he also has the temptation to kill. Also, in both of these examples, both the barber and Rihanna are very confused. "i don't want to take away his life, i don't want to be a murderer" was what Rihanna had quoted because of this confusion that left her wondering if she should kill this man or not. For lather that's all, the whole story revolved around this general topic of the barber debating against himself whether he should murder the captain or not. Unfaithful is a very good example of the theme. She's this man's girlfriend, not a murderer. Her role determines her actions.

Remember the Titans clip.
This is a very significant and crucial part in the movie. Throughout the movie, the world is re winded, and we are back in the days of racism. In the town, there is a tradition where there is a football team, but this year it's different. The coach is a black man. Because of this, the team is made up of both black and white men. The new coach, "coach Boone" gives a speech in this clip of how "our roles determine our actions". He explains the battle on Gettysburg, and how he lost his family because of this. By following the roles that were given to them as white people being more dominant, it destroyed his family because they were of different skin colour. It relates to the short story "Lather and nothing else" because of the confusion the barber had to stay in the role of the barber, and the confusion the white and black men had to respect each other, or stay in role as enemy. Both were confused about their roles in the society. These men on the football team, weren't sure if they were supposed to listen to this one black man the society usually frowns upon, and the barber wasn't sure if he should give up his role as barber, and become a murderer. Notice in the beginning of the clip that there is a young black man encouraging another young black man to "keep running"?. This shows that these men that were hating other people with different sk
in colour were totally capable of loving each other. This relates to the short story because it gives constant reference to how sharp the barber's blade is, and how easy it would be to kill. Meaning the barber could've also killed very easily. This shows that both the black and white men in the clip, and the barber are very capable of changing their actions.
